Winter Preparations
Sheffield City Council and our partners at Streets Ahead have provided an overview of the work taking place across the city.
For all information relating to roads this winter, you can view our dedicated page online here.
Roads
The Streets Ahead team closely monitor the weather forecast throughout the winter months so they can be ready if bad weather arrives. A fleet of 19 gritters are on standby, 24 hours, 7 days a week through until May.
For regular updates on gritters, please follow @sccstreetsahead on Twitter.
Schools
Sheffield schools will always do their utmost to stay open, however, changes to opening times may occur due to adverse weather.
If you are unsure if your school is opening, you should hear from your child’s school via their usual methods in the first instance. You can also check all school closures on www.sheffield.gov.uk/
Follow @sheffcouncil #Sheffschools for regular updates.
Snowy Weather Arrangements - School opening
Our general approach is that High Green Primary School will remain open wherever it is safe to do so. We recognise how important this is both for children’s education and for families who need to get to work.
Any decision to close, delay opening, or close early will be made based on:
· The safety of the school site
· Staff availability to meet supervision requirements
· Weather and travel conditions across Sheffield
Where possible, we will liaise closely with St Mary’s and Paces School to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach across our local schools.
How we will communicate If a decision is made to close the school, delay opening, or make changes to the school day, we will communicate this as early as possible via:
· ParentMail
· The school website
· Our school Facebook page
In the event of heavy snow overnight, we aim to notify families by 7:15am wherever possible.
We also recommend that parents listen out for Hallam FM, who announce school closures across Sheffield during severe weather.
If you have not received a message from us, please assume school is open as normal. To support this process, we kindly ask that parents do not telephone school to check, as this can prevent staff from preparing the site safely.
Breakfast Club
Our Breakfast Club normally operates from 7:30am.
In severe weather, there may be occasions when Breakfast Club needs to be cancelled or start later due to staffing or site safety.
During the school day In extreme circumstances, it may be necessary to close the school during the day. If this happens:
· Parents will be contacted via Parentmail and Facebook.
· Children will always be supervised safely until they are collected
Please do not collect children early unless we have contacted you to do so, as this can be disruptive and distressing for pupils.
Travel and attendance We understand that some families may feel it is unsafe to travel in severe conditions, particularly if you live further away or have individual circumstances to consider. In these situations, we trust parents to make sensible decisions based on health and safety. We will always be supportive of these decisions.
If you are delayed collecting your child or need to make alternative arrangements, please contact the school so we can ensure your child is cared for safely.
Outdoor play and clothing During snowy weather:
· Snowballs, sliding or kicking snow are not permitted
· Outdoor play may continue only if children are wearing:
o Waterproof boots
o A warm coat, hat and gloves
Please also send children with indoor shoes or PE pumps to change into.
Site access We will prioritise clearing main access routes within the school site only (for example, from the main gate to the school office and from the rear gate to the playground).
We are unable to clear pavements, ginnels or routes leading to the school site. Care should be taken when entering and leaving the school grounds.

Bins:

If bad weather coincides with your usual bin collection day, please put your bin out as usual. We may not be able to collect it at the usual time but will aim to collect it as soon as possible.
We hope this is information is helpful. We will continue to keep you up to date with our winter preparations through the channels highlighted in this message.
